Every day, people search the Internet looking for home based business ideas that would provide them both professional independence and financial freedom. Unfortunately, many people who start a home based business fail within the first year. Why? The answer is not simple. Below are some points to consider when formulating a home based business plan.

Capitalize on your strengths

To optimize your chances of success, select a type of home based business based on self knowledge. Take an honest inventory of your strengths and weaknesses. What are you good at? What are you not so good at? Though it is sometimes difficult to admit your weaknesses, self-awareness is the key to achieving success in business. Select a business in which your duties would require you to utilize your strengths, rather than your weaknesses. For example, let's say you prefer to work alone and in quiet spaces; you are organized and love to write. You would probably enjoy a career as a writer.



Believe in a product or service

After you have defined the type of business you would thrive in, before you can ultimately determine your success, you must become familiar with the product or service you will be offering. It is commonly believed in business that if a sales person believes in a product or service, he or she will be more successful selling it. Sure, some people have the natural ability to sell ice to Eskimos or water to fish, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

One way to gain familiarity with a product or service before committing to selling is to first use the product yourself. For example, if you are considering applying for a network marketing position, educate yourself about the product you would be selling by using the product. In addition to helping you determine whether you can believe in the product, the experience will also give you the knowledge required to satisfactorily respond to tough interview questions, in the event you do decide to pursue employment with the company.

Define a budget

After choosing the type of business in which your strengths could best be utilized, and determining a product or service you believe in, you must then define a budget. Keep in mind it takes two months to determine the potential success of any business endeavor, so until then, it is important to adhere to a strict budget. As well, if you are part of a mlm, your sponsor may require you to purchase products that would facilitate your professional ease and success. However, your commitment to adhere to a strict financial budget may require that your sponsor rank items in order of importance, to ensure that you first acquire items that will provide the most benefit.

OK! You have selected a type of business, chosen a product, and defined a budget. You are almost ready to start operating your home based business.

Register with the SCC

Of course, before anyone may legally operate any business, you must first register with the State Corporation Commission, usually located in the capital of the state in which you reside. You must also contact the Federal Corporation Commission (FCC) in order to be assigned a (Federal) Employer Identification number (EIN), which is required to open a business banking account, as well as submit tax forms at the end of the business year.

Establish a customer base

Congratulations! Your business is now operational. Last, you must launch a marketing plan in order to gain customers. Numerous marketing venues include newspaper and television advertisements, flyers, mailing lists, pay-per-click advertisements, power-links, blog sites, pod casts, professional networking sites and more.

Remember that you are in charge of writing your marketing plan. Each venue has its own strengths and weaknesses. Obviously, your budget will be a key factor in determining a diversified marketing strategy, which will guarantee that your business is exposed to the highest number of potential customers.

Prepare for challenges and distractions

Operating a business from home can be much more challenging than in a traditional brick-and-mortar setting. For example, challenges at home may include distractions like kids and television, as well as the constant temptation to take a nap. To remain focused on your business, make sure your home office is located away from any distractions. Even after outlining a perfect business plan, if you don’t practice time management and strict discipline when operating a business from home, you will waste time and money, and ultimately your business will fail.
